About the Book

Beneath the scorched soil of Lightning Ridge lies a treasure rarer than gold: black opals. But in the vast, unforgiving Outback, it’s not just the elements that are deadly.

Meet Rusty, a seasoned opal miner guarding secrets buried as deep as the mines he descends. And Kate, the rugged cattle herder whose wit is as sharp as the spade she wields. Together, they’re drawn into a dangerous game of cat and mouse with “ratters” – thieves desperate enough to plunder the depths for a glint of the coveted stone.

As Rusty and Kate navigate the treacherous terrain, from the vast wilderness to the eerie mine shafts, they must not only defend their claims but also confront their own shadows amidst the looming threats. All the while, the vibrant wildlife of the Outback looks on, each creature holding its own mysteries.

In “The Ratters of Lightning Ridge,” Richard Holmes crafts an atmospheric tale that is as luminous as the opals themselves.
